Lincolnshire Sausages

What do Champagne, Jersey Royal potatoes and Parmesan Cheese all have in common?

They are only produced in a small, defined area, have protection under EC law and a premium price tag. This allows the producers to protect the character and integrity of the product and prevent cheap copies.

Compare this to some of our best loved food - Melton Mowbray Pork Pies, Cumberland Sausages and Lincolnshire Sausages. These are great regional foods which have lost that regional cachet and been mass produced in factories up and down the land.

British food is launching a fight back and trying to gain the same protection afforded to many European producers (The UK only has 29 protected products compared to over 400 for the EC as a whole).

Its Our Sausage is a campaign launched to protect the Lincolnshire Sausage. It follows similar efforts from the Melton Mowbray Pie and Cumberland Sausage producers.

A proper Lincolnshire Sausage is made with pork and flavoured with sage. Just sage - as explained in Sausage Flavours. This should not be confused with Pork & Herb sausages which have no regional connection.

The scale of the problem facing this and other campaigns is the power of the supermarkets and the factory food industry (Northern Foods is a large UK company fighting against the Pork Pie campaign).

I donít think any of the supermarkets sell Lincolnshire sausages made in Lincolnshire (as with Cumberland and most Melton Mowbray Pork Pies).

If you want to support the campaign sign up for the petition, stop buying the supermarket sausages and look at our Producers to find real Lincolnshire producers!

And what about the Cornish Pasty?
