After trading for 21 years Riverford cannot be accused of jumping on any band wagons. They have 3 shops, the HQ is a mini supermarket (selling meat, cheese, dairy, wine, dried food, bread etc) next to the family farm and down a typical Devon lane, they also have two urban outlets in nearby Totnes (High Street) and in Kitley near Plymouth.

I visited the HQ and was immediately struck by the car park - a mixture of upmarket 4x4s and estate cars plus a exotic selection of slightly more jaded cars.

This sums up the shops attraction and stock, they appeal to the die hard organic as much as the middle class foodie. Much of the food is organic (and naturally includes lots of local, Devon food). Some meat is organic and they do sell organic sausages, but most of the pork they sell is not. However, it is reared on the farm and enjoys a high welfare free range existence.

The sausages are priced at around £6 per kilo and simply made with a course, meaty texture, natural herbs and skins. The Thai sausages are the pick of the range and are superb with great heat and depth of flavour. They concentrate on simple, meaty sausages such as French garlic sausages, excellent chipolatas and a fresh cooking chorizo. Mail order is also available from the high quality website.
