product picture Not a case of motorway madness but one of the finest food shops you will find in the country, let alone in a motorway services.

Just north of junction 38 on the M6 you will find Westmorland Motorway Services. Both the northbound and southbound services have large farm shops which Prince Charles opened in early 2004. In 2003 they won Best Local Retailer in the BBC Radio 4 Food and Farming Awards. This is no tourist rip off, the quality of the new shops and the stock would beat the best shops in most of our large cities.

They sell a superb selection of fine foods (meat, cheese from a cheese counter, jams, prepared foods, local bread, biscuits etc) with a strong presence from Northern England and Scotland. Being in Cumbria you will find Cumbrian specialties such as Cumberland sausage and Sticky toffee pudding.

Sausage lovers can chose from an excellent selection including near full ranges from Sillfield Farm , Slacks, Richard Woodall, Islay Fine Food, Mansergh Hall, The Old Smokehouse and other quality producers.

They offer a mail order service and you can even order ahead and pick up your shopping the next day (complete with ice bags).

Superb shops anywhere but on a motorway services remarkable! Worth a special trip!

Customer reviews

We found them several years ago before becoming computer literate and then found the Westmorland Hotel. Both offer excellent service, they still sell sausages to die for - well, not to die for because I want to continue living to eat them! I am sure there are other excellent lamb sausages but yours, eaten after a long slog back down the M6 with some creamy, pesto flavoured mashed potatoes and a glass of Merlot were wonderful. All power to your pigs, recipes and long live your sausages. Oops, I forgot to mention your bread - ate last slice today. Why didn''t I buy more and freeze?

What a lovely surprise these shops were while driving from Scotland south on the M6! The cold meat pies are FABULOUS! We also bought cheese which was outstanding, and several other items as well. This sure beats the fast food "plastic food" places we have on interstate highways in the States!
