Crombies of Edinburgh - Auld Reekie

Anyone visiting the various Edinburgh festivals should put aside a few hours for some food shopping. My choice would be Jenners food hall for Scottish food, Valvona & Crolla (arguably the best Italian deli in the UK) and Crombies of Edinburgh.

Crombies are an Edinburgh institution and favoured by such foodie luminaries as Clarissa Dickson-Wright. They are a traditional food hall where you browse, collect purchases from the butchers and pay at a separate cash desk.

They make superb sausages, the fat lady prefers the Toulouse and they recently won awards for a pork, caramelized onion and parsley.

Our favorite though is the Auld Reekie. A stupendous franfurter style smoked sausage made with beef and pork. This is superb hot or cold and a good cooking sausage for Cassoulet or Warm potato salad with sausages.

They cook with very little fat loss (especially for a beef sausage), are juicy and have a strong flavour which explodes in the mouth. In fact forget the festivals - go shopping!
