Rhug Estate - Pork Sausages

sausage of the week By: Rhug Estate

Could this be the Welsh version of Daylesford Organics? Organic credentials, old money, slick (expensive) packaging and good sausages.

The Rhug Estate is in North Wales and has been owned by the same family for 300 years. They farm organically and sell the whole range of meat - lamb, beef, pork and game. They make a good range of sausages, sausage meat, stuffings and exotica such as black or white pudding. Prices are around 8 to 11 per kilo. All the sausages are non organic - made with organic meat but non organic seasonings.

We tried the plain pork at 8 per kilo and were pleasantly surprised. A nice, comforting butchers sausage which was moist and well spiced. Everyone will like this because it is a well made, fairly bland sausage. Unlike many organic sausages it is moist and does not dry out, even when eaten cold.

Overall they score 7 on our scoring system. This would have been more had the price been slightly lower.

They sell via the web, food fairs and at a farm shop. They also have a monthly farmers market on the first Sunday of each month with a Christmas market on the 3 December 2006.
