The judges, included Eric Reeve from the Essex Pig Company aka Jimmy’s Farm, ‘Black Farmer’ Wilfred Emmanuel-Jones and Tom Graham, budding sausage-maker Tom Archer in Radio 4’s The Archers.
As entries for the first Breakfast category were digested, the judges also voted for their number one Heart of England apple juice – single cox variety. Jus of Glebe Farm, Ledbury was pronounced the winner with Clive’s Fruit Farm of Upton Upon Severn coming a close second.
The judges agreed that one of our Top 10 Producers Michael Kirk , was best in the Speciality category, awarding first prize for the tastiest breakfast sausage to Checketts of Ombersley , for their Boreley Pork Sausage.
A delighted Michael Bachyk, who owns the Michael Kirk shop in Wolverhampton says, ‘I did have faith in this product as it won several other competitions last year, including the West Midlands BPEX title and Gold at the Great Taste Awards. It’s a quality product that the whole team helped to create, so it’s thanks to them that we’ve won.’
Along with brother Phil, Tony Checketts makes the Boreley Pork Sausage in his Worcestershire village shop every week to an old local recipe. He says, ‘The Checketts have been butchering in Ombersley since 1902. We use great lean meat from nearby farms, add a touch of black pepper and let the flavour speak for itself. We’re so pleased to have won for the village and our county and are really proud!’
