Otley and Ilkley are two small West Yorkshire towns a few miles apart. Ilkley has long been considered the foodie destination because it has the superb Lishmans of Ilkley (who have won nearly every major competition and are one of our top 10 producers) and a Booths supermarket.

Otley is striking back - it has a clutch of excellent butchers (see below) and a rare thing up north -a Waitrose!

Two Otley butchers won prizes at the recent Great Yorkshire Pork Pie, Sausage and Products Competition.

This is the largest product evaluation competition in the country with over 300 entries.

The class-winning thin pork sausage from George Middlemiss & Son of Otley, went on to become Yorkshire's supreme champion sausage. Their secret sausage recipe has been handed down over five generations of the Middlemiss family. The shop, this year celebrating its 125th anniversary, was also notching a notable double after becoming 2004 supreme pork-pie champions.

The reserve supreme champion sausage, a "Hot Tomato" creation which had earlier won the speciality sausage class, came from Hinchliffes Farm Shop of Netherton, Huddersfield.

Woods of Carcroft, Doncaster, supreme pork pie champions last year, earned another major accolade this year by winning the black pudding championship.

Wakefield butcher H Hofmann & Sons won the large pork pie class and were chosen as the county's supreme champion pork-pie makers.

The small pork-pie class went to Wilsons Butchers of Crossgates Leeds - the third time they have won it. Their entry was then selected as the reserve supreme champion pork pie.

Otley pie experts EB Weegmann won the speciality pie competition with a superb pie of chicken breast, stuffing and pickle - a really good Christmas pie!

The honour of winning a brand-new class for burgers fell to Kendall's Butchers, of Pateley Bridge.

Other than Kendall's, all the winners came from South or West Yorkshire.
