The Old Smokehouse make a wide range of oak smoked foods including fish, poultry, cheese and a range of 4 sausages. They also make a range of 15 hand made chocolate truffles.
The sausages are the spicy Penrith Pepperpot, a Cumberland (sold in a coil), the Fellman and a venison sausage. We brought the Cumberland, this is made by them from 98% meat and then smoked. It is an excellent meaty sausage with good chunks of meat and fat. We ate ours cold as part of a picnic but they can be reheated. Tastewise it is similar to a smoked kabonos or salami. They cost around £11 per kilo. This might seem expensive but because they are sold cooked there will be no waste.
They won Gold for the Fellman sausages at the 2004 Great Taste Awards.
They can be brought from the shop near Penrith, markets, mail order and at Tebay Services on the M6.
I recently tasted the Fellman sausage which was fantastic.
