Harrogate is one of the best food towns in the country. It may lack a market (nnext door Knaresborough has a good one) and has a average farmers market but the shops are superb. Betty's of Harrogate is simply the best cake shop in the country. Harrogate is the home of Elite Meats, 2003 Supreme Champion, it has a excellent cheese shop, Farrers Food Hall is good, Weetons is best missed.
Kings Road is located 10 minutes away from the town centre but is a food destination in its own right. In a row there is Ramus (superb Fishmongers), the best green grocer going, Arcimbingos deli (voted one of the 50 best food shops in the country and a good sausge source) and an authentic French bakery.
That leaves Andy Anant who opened shop in late 2004. He is a retail butcher who also provides meat to the great and good in the local restaurant and hotel trade. That's why a small butcher can have the range and quality of the very best butchers in the country (below the shop he has a crew of butchers preping meat). He sells rare breed meat, has regular deliveries from Paris markets and will prepare specials or order meats, talking to Andy you soon understand that he is passionate about good food and has a deep knowledge.
The sausages are superb. The picture says it all - Veal & Redcurrant, Pork, Apple & Black Pudding, Venison & Apple and Pheasant, Cranberry & Thyme. These are complex, grown up flavours, not faddy or clumsy like many butchers trying to impress, all the sausages are meaty and moist. A must visit on any trip to Yorkshire's finest town!
I''ve had the pleasure of trying Andy''s regular pork sausage and the exceptional pork, black pudding and apple. The pork sausages are thick and chunky and full of meat. They have a lovely texture and are full of flavour. The pork, black pudding and apple are out of the top drawer. The use of black pudding is sparing, so the effect of taste and texture is subtle, but pleasing nonetheless.
I get all my meat from Andy- not just sausages - and have never been disappointed. His prices are similar to the supermarket, but the leap in quality is astounding. I particularly liked his beef and red wine sausages.
I STARTED USING ANDY IN MID 2006
SHALL NEVER GO ANYWHERE ELSE FROM NOW ON. EVERY TIME MY WIFE & I GO THERE WE SAY IT CANT''T GET BETTER-BUT IT DOES EVERY TIME-JUST SUPERB QUALITY AT SENSIBLE PRICES
